Vomit for thought?

Spiritual and supernatural experiences are something that scares us. But, most of us would like to go through some supernatural experience just to confirm our belief in all that is unseen. Experiencing a jinn, for example, would be something that would make most of us freak out, but in a way it would satisfy us in that we would have confirmed a bit of the supernatural and spiritual realities that the material world likes to call “blind faith”.

However, I will mention a more closer-to-life experience I had while I was at University in the US. I feel this experience of mine will help Muslims (who believe in the Unseen) and non-Muslims alike. The experience centers on Allah being The Sustainer for all of His creation and also gives some insight into how Allah’s creation of evil is part of His design to run the affairs of this material world.

In the winter of 2003, I was busy designing a 16-bit processor. I was on my way from my home towards my computer lab, which was hardly at a distance of 200 meters. I set out at around 1:30 at night to program the whole night since it was a weekend. A fraternity happens to come in the middle of the way from my residence to the computer lab. Since it was the weekend, the guys at the frat were partying away – boozing, dancing, women and all the other usual vices of University life. I ignored them and was engrossed in my own thoughts of how I would survive the next semester as I was very low on cash.

As I approached the entrance to the fraternity, I saw a group of 3 girls trying to control a fourth girl who was terribly drunk. These other girls were drunk themselves and the scene was pretty ugly. This terribly drunk girl was on one knee and her friends were holding her arms so that she wouldn’t fall flat on her face. I was at a distance of about 4 meters from her when she looked at me. I could swear I saw her eyeballs twirling round and round as if she was about to pass out. Just then she threw up! All that she had eaten prior was all over the floor and I jumped to the side to avoid her puke soiling my clothes! I got absolutely pissed off at her and everyone in that frat who were partying.

Just before I had left the house, I was watching on CNN how Iraqis in their own country were being slaughtered by American forces in their bid to oust Saddam and his “weapons of mass destruction”. This compounded my anger and I remember thinking to myself, “Why does God let these guys have all their fun while they are going around killing innocent people half way across the globe!?” I was sad, frustrated and livid at how these guys and girls didn’t give a damn about the misery in Iraq and were busy boozing and throwing up food whereas people in Iraq, Africa etc were finding it hard to have a day’s meal!

I got to the computer lab and started doing my work, but I couldn’t concentrate because of what I had just witnessed. I somehow managed to complete one module of the processor and it was just about daybreak outside. I prayed the morning prayer and set off back home with my eyes half closed. From a distance I could see the fraternity, which was by now silent and deserted from the outside.

As I got closer to the place where that girl had vomited earlier in the night, I saw little birds feeding off the vomit of this woman! Looking at these birds I broke into a smile and whatever that had transpired last night made complete sense to me! I remember saying, “Subhan Allah!” and thinking how that apparently ugly episode was something Allah had ordained to happen to feed these little birds the next morning!

For the first time in my life, I understood how God works in His own ways that may not make sense to us because we are not privy to His plans. I also came to the realization how God is not bound by the boundaries that He has set for us. I was so touched and moved by this sight that I stood there for a minute watching those birds feed on the vomit. I thanked God for all the favors He has done on me and also put my trust in Him that He had something planned for me the following semester. Suddenly, I wasn’t so worried about how I would finance my last semester at University.

Al,
nice story, but based on that premise God must be thinking an awful lot about Western birdies' wellbeing - especially in London's West End on Friday night...

Haha nick! :)

God is always busy thinking and providing for all of His creation. We are His responsibility you know - each one of us - infidel or not hehe.

Salam Al-
Nice post..
I had so many similar encounters, hundreds of them.. but we wouldn't transcend through the experience if we didn't look at it with the eyes of the 'spirit'..
A good book to read with regard to this is " Harness the power of coincidence " by Deepak Chopra. I was going through a 'phase' in my life when I started reading this type of books (spirituality). I do believe that the most coincidental encounters (to us) are mainly planned by God. All we need to do is fine-tune our senses and make them completely receptive to the unspoken language of the universe; then only we can transcend and connect with our truth and with other spirits around the globe.

I don't see how the experience you had, though I understand it must have been quite powerful, having experienced similar things in the past, and similar feelings, how this centres on the "teachings" you talk about.

This episode, if I would have witnessed it myself in the same way you have, would have simply "opened my eyes" and I would have thanked God I was not in that position.

Thank you for sharing the thoughts in this post: obviously it was quite moving for you, and a life-changing experience.

Nice post and nice blog! I didn't know you started writing.. thanks for pointing out about ur blog on Rosh's blog.

Bass, ur blog post was wayy tooo long! I would just say:
1- was building 16 bit machine
2- was watching iraq news on CNN, became angry.
3- Saw drunk students , one puked.
4- Was angry (again), but saw the wisdom of the puke
5- Birds eat re-processed food.
The End

(as an aside: is it haram for birds to eat food that might still have alcohol in it?)

I guess I could summarise your post and my comment further into "the glass is half full"

mabrook on blogging.. looking forward 2 more.

I don't think we can completely comprehend why certain things happen or the plans in play, from up above. I've experienced certain chain of events in life - which made me question my belief, then find reassurance, only to question it again (given further developments)and find re-reassurance - the cycle continues.

I've come to the realization, things always happen for a reason, most often a positive can inadvertently lead to something "negative" - to give rise to another positive and multiple "negatives". However, I do believe each amongst us are embedded with the good & the bad - and perhaps it is from a chain of events, called life - we come to realize the goodness in our souls.

"I also came to the realization how God is not bound by the boundaries that He has set for us."

It is also true, man has set way too many boundaries/borders that limits the growth for more good in today's world, yet choose to ignore the directions/guidance from up above.

not a particularly pleasant image, but a very cogent reminder of the mysteries of life.... it is a sad statement though of how easy we can waste away our lives and blind ourselves through such escapes. university campuses in the u.s. are some of the most scariest places for mindlessness, so contradictory to the original ideas of "higher" education....

i*maginate: I have seen way too many drunk people in miserable states. I had to carry a friend back home when he was completely wasted.

What made this experience different was because of the thoughts that were in my mind. I was very worried about how I would finance my final semester and was quite literally thinking that God had abandoned me. When I saw the partying kids, I complained more to God for blessing those who "don't deserve" it.

Hence, what I witnessed made me realize that God DOES care about each and everyone of us. Most of us, as IYM mentions, miss these clear signs.

oh, i had to take some of my friends to hospital for stitches after their stupid drunken nights when i was in uni. idiots... slaves to alcohol.

i never tried to force them to change, but they were my friends (coz i made friends with them when they were sober) and i stick by my friends.

i especially stick by them when they are drunk and they need me.. need me to take embarrassing pictures... or "documentary evidence" like i used to call it..

many of them took it easy on the booze by the time we graduated.

Same here BuJ - the number of times you cover up for them, take the wasted ones home, make sure, they don't embarrass themselves in front of strangers & "friends" - who'd be passing on more drinks to them.

I never understood (or understand) what's the "deal" or the "joy" in drinking and being wasted? The "joy" of being in a crowded dark, smelly room - often called a club - wearing provocative clothes and dance to each other's genitalia (pardon the direct thoughts/words).

Isn't it better to know someone over a cupa coffee in a sane, quite place - out in the open with trees, sunshine and a nice breeze?

Rosh and Buj:

Exactly my sentiments! The way these guys act is just pure madness! What hurts is that some of these friends of mine are nice and reasonable people.

I wish I knew you both in real life. I am sure we'd all make good friends :)

LOL Rosh.. the dancing image is very hilarious..
Medical jargon: 'genitalia' ending with 'ia' is pleural, and ending with 'um' as in 'genitalium' is singular (that's Latin for Medicine).. in case you want to use for another phrase.. LOL
Al- , sorry for the wrong title.. I'm home now, here is the correct title of that book "The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire - Harnessing the Infinite Power of Coincidence" by Deepak Chopra.
He's a very good motivational speaker..
Actually, I met him here in Montreal about 3 years ago during one of his book-release evenings " The book of secrets - unlocking the hidden dimensions of your life " .. we were about 2000 attending his talk; and amazingly enough, he managed to hypnotize us all at the same time with his meditation session at the end of his talk.. it was unbelievable..
His weekend meditation sessions are also worth attending, his next one would be in November; it's called "Seduction of the Spirit".. I might go for that..
Time to meditate now.. bye guys..

Steady on Al.

Getting wasted is a transcendental experience, almost mystical.

In fact, one is actually mystified the day after why one got pissed in the first place.

Instead of religion we Westerners turn to drugs instead.
You should be glad actually - each wasted teenager is evidently in need of spirit(ual) experience and hence a potential convert to religion.

Your chance for Da'wah!!
