Man in the mirror

I first heard this song as a 12 year old in 1990. This song had an impact one me back then and does so even now. Great lyrics (incidentally it is not written by Michael Jackson), which I feel people should take seriously in not just philanthrophy, but every sphere of life.

Rosh, this entry is dedicated to you, hehe.

Lyrics:

I'm gonna make a change, for once in my life
It's gonna feel real good, gonna make a difference
Gonna make it right...

As I, turn up the collar on my favorite winter coat
This wind is blowin' my mind
I see the kids in the street, with not enough to eat
Who am I, to be blind? Pretending not to see their needs
A summer's disregard, a broken bottle top
And a one man's soul
They follow each other on the wind ya' know'
Cause they got nowhere to go
That's why I want you to know

(Chorus)
I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change

I've been a victim of a selfish kind of love
It's time that I realize
That there are some with no home, not a nickel to loan
Could it be really me, pretending that they're not alone?

A willow deeply scarred, somebody's broken heart
And a washed-out dream
They follow the pattern of the wind, ya' see
Cause they got no place to be
That's why I'm starting with me

(Chorus)

I love this song! Especially those little "hiccup" noises MJ makes before he says "I'm gonna make a change" hehe

I love MJ! I also used to listen to it when it came out...in fact, "Bad" was one of my first CDs!

i*maginate, MJ was a household name once upon a time! People in Pakistan wouldn't know their own president, but they would know "Maikal Jucksun"!

I don't think there were CDs back in 1987 :P Or was I THAT backward?? hehe.

But that album was great! I have a cousin in Pakistan who was so influenced by it that he STILL signs his name in the way "BAD" was written! hahaha.

That guy is married with a kid, uff!

lol Al - thanks for the dedication. Am not sure what to say, except, perhaps shouldn't judge a book at blogoshphere :)

I know you mean well, and I wish there are more like you around me right now :)

Living at the heart of capitalism takes a toll on ones soul.

You are certainly FUBAR and please do us all a favor and go back to your cave.

Here is a special musical dedication from me to everyone! It is a recognized anti war song from Chile which stands for human freedom from torture and oppressive regimes .
You can listen to the emotional interpretation of Mercedes Sosa on You Tube

Here are the words of the poem in Spanish and English (it really looses in English :- (): I believe it has been translated in all the major languages in this world accept Arabic – that is sad :-(

Gracias a la vida
Poem by Violeta Parra
[English translation by William Morín]

Graba noche y dìa grillos y canarios
Martillos, turbinas, ladrillos, chubascos
Y la voz tan tierna de mi bien amado.

Gracias a la vida, que me ha dado tanto.
Me ha dado el sonido y el abecedario.
Con él las palabras que pienso y declaro,
“Madre,” “amigo,” “hermano,” y luz alumbrando

Thank you to life

Thank you to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me two beams of light, that when opened,
Can perfectly distinguish black from white
And in the sky above, her starry backdrop,
And from within the multitude
The one that I love.

Thank you to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me an ear that, in all of its width
Records—night and day—crickets and canaries,
Hammers and turbines and bricks and storms,
And the tender voice of my beloved.

Thank you to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me sounds and the alphabet.
With them the words that I think and declare:
“Mother,” “Friend,” “Brother” and the light shining.
The route of the soul from which comes love.

Thank you to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me the ability to walk with my tired feet.
With them I have traversed cities and puddles
Valleys and deserts, mountains and plains
And your house, your street and your patio.

Thank you to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me a heart, that causes my frame to shudder.
When I see the fruit of the human brain,
When I see good so far from bad,
When I see within the clarity of your eyes…

Thank you to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me laughter and it gave me longing.
With them I distinguish happiness and pain—
The two materials from which my songs are formed,
And your song, as well, which is the same song.
And everyone’s song, which is my very song.

Big hug for everyone :- )
